I started drumming after playing the sax in elementary / middle school when I was 12 going on 13. Inspired by classical percussionist, University of Florida classical marimba player and rock drummer Jeremy Kushner, who taught me so much in the art of drumming at an early age. I later formally studied in Yonkers, NY, learning proper technique and independence (mostly through Jim Chapin's Book). After high school, I went in to the Navy..great experience ...loved the Navy though..even played with a few musicians while in Great Lakes, Illinois. After, I played local rock gigs in NY and tri state area and was discovering a sound that started to become unique to my way of playing (very similar to Matt Cameron and Dave Weckl's way of finesse in drumming).
In 1992, on one particular trip, I traveled to Florida, my home state. I decided to visit the annual SunFest (Jazzfest at the time).. I heard Richard Elliot going crazy at one end of the bizzare on main stage and later walked around with Steve Reid from the Rippingtons who helped guide me (really not knowing who he was..lol just coincidence I guess) but I was there to see Nestor Torres, whom I admired very much early on (big fan). I went to the stage area where Torres was to perform expecting to see Nestor Torres Morning Ride's recording artists and was then blown away by his entire rhythm section.
I took what I learned and capitalized from this awakening and returned to NY. I began submerging myself into rigorous drumming, mostly Brazilian and afro Cuban rhythms. After a lapse of time due to a ruptured appendix , I continued drumming after learning how to walk again (took about six months) and soon started performing at Defemios, NY (early 2000's) Later, my career turned into a whirlwind of gigs and session work including live performances with Hilton Ruiz, Tony Joyner, Robbie Ameen, Tony Torres, Adela Dalto, Darren Leonidas, Adam Marr, Chris Reising, Jan Leder, and Hiroshi Yamazaki. I was heavy into the NYC Jazz scene including Standards, SOB's, Music Hall, L' Oro DiNapoli, Isabel's, Tre Amici, Ed Sullivan Theater and Smoke to name a few. Sessions included working extensively with Darren Leonidas (whom I admire very much as a composer and guitarist), Hiroshi (out of control pianist with such an elegance that brings the Blue Note to a roar), Adela Dalto live performances circuit cut a little short (due to Adela's agenda) but wow, some of the best performances that brought the houses down across NYC in the Brazilian Jazz field. As for clinics: private clinic sessions: collaboration with drummer Robbie Ameen experimental drumming Ed Sullivan Theater, NYC. (rock, samba, salsa etc...would love do that all day, every day). I have since then relocated to South FL. Alongside performing with other various artists, I am currently collaborating in an upcoming jazz / world music project.
Enjoy incorporating musical elements of Jazz, Afro-Cuban, Brazilian, Bulgarian and Rock. Musical Influences include band legends such as Dave Valentin, Bireli Lagrene, Antonio Carlos Jobim, Ivan Lins, Astrud Gilberto, Chick Corea, Rush, Mongo Santamaria, Dori Caymmi, Jorge Dalto, Eliane Elias and Michel Camilo. Discovering sounds that hit the soul.. for instance..there's nothing bettter than a ride with a flute or acoustic guitar with a smooth groove snare ... in other words, the style is embedded in combining different sounds from what you create and most importantly the spirit behind those sounds..this will bring forth the best music with the most beautiful expression!. - Brandon plays Pearl Drums exclusively
